Below a undrr prekladáme do slovenčiny predložkou pod, čo mnohým ľuďom, najmä začiatočníkom, vytvára otázku, či majú použiť under a či below.

Below sa bežne používa vo význame “nižšie” alebo “menej ako“, napr.:

• The sun disappeared below the horizon. 
• Last week temperatures were below normal. 

Below môže byť aj príslovka (adverb), napr.:

• We stood at the top of the hill and looked at the valley below.

Under sa používa viac s nádväznosťou na miesto, napr.:

• We sat under an old green tree.
• Draw a line under each verb you don’t understand. – alebo underline 🙂
• In several countries there are many people living under the bridge.
• There’s a wardrobe under the stairs.

Under sa však používa aj vo význame vedený, kontrolovaný, napr.:

• The company is under new management. 
• Under the terms of the agreement, you will get your salary on the first of each month.

Under nájdeme aj v ustálených slovných spojeniach. Tu je niekoľko z nich:

• under control = able to be managed successfully: Tom tried to get his weight under control.
• under pressure = in a stressful situation: Managers should be able to think under pressure.
• under normal circumstances = in a normal situation: Under normal circumstances Ted might have spent more time abroad.
• under the law = according to the law: Under the law, hospitals have to treat any patient who needs it.
